These sets appear constantly at car boot sales, in charity shops and in online listings, often at a fraction of the new price and often incomplete. Some are excellent buys. Others are a box of plastic that will never take a modern peg. The difference is visible in about ninety seconds if you know what to look at.<\/p>\n

First question: bulb or LED<\/h2>\n

Boards from the 1960s to the 1990s were lit by an incandescent bulb and became noticeably warm in use. Later ones use LEDs and stay cool. Neither is unsafe when working properly, but a bulb model needs more attention, gets through power faster and should never be left running unattended.<\/p>\n

Second question: how does it get its power<\/h2>\n

Check for a mains lead, and if there is one, inspect the flex and the plug closely. Perished insulation, taped repairs or a cracked plug body mean walk away; this is not a bargain worth troubleshooting. Battery models are simpler and generally the safer second-hand buy.<\/p>\n

Third question: the battery compartment<\/h2>\n

Open it. Green or white crust on the contacts means leaked cells, which is sometimes cleanable and sometimes terminal. The compartment must also close with a screw, and a missing screw is a genuine reason to refuse, not a small annoyance.<\/p>\n

Fourth question: the pegs<\/h2>\n

Old pegs are frequently a different diameter and length from current ones, so a vintage board may not accept anything you can buy today. Before paying for a set that is short of pegs, check what refills exist for that grid in the current range at https:\/\/lite-brite.net\/<\/a>, and assume nothing fits until it is confirmed.<\/p>\n

Fifth question: the grid itself<\/h2>\n

Look across the surface at an angle. Holes that have been reamed out by forcing the wrong pegs in will not grip properly, and cracked plastic around the edge of the grid usually spreads. A slightly discoloured but intact grid is fine.<\/p>\n

Things that do not matter<\/h2>\n

  • Missing original box, which nobody keeps anyway<\/li>\n
  • Torn template sheets, since blank black paper replaces them<\/li>\n
  • Scuffed artwork on the housing<\/li>\n
  • Mixed peg colours in odd proportions<\/li>\n
  • Missing instructions, which explain nothing you cannot work out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Cleaning what you bring home<\/h2>\n

    Wipe the housing with a damp cloth and dry it, wash loose pegs in warm soapy water and dry them thoroughly before use, and never immerse the board or the battery compartment. Blow dust out of the holes rather than poking anything into them.<\/p>\n

    The safety points that outrank the price<\/h2>\n

    Any second-hand set contains small parts and is unsuitable for children under three regardless of what the seller says. If the model or a remote takes coin cells, check none are loose in the box; swallowed button cells cause severe internal burns within hours and need immediate emergency care.<\/p>\n

    What a good second-hand buy looks like<\/h2>\n

    An LED-era board, battery powered, compartment clean and screwed shut, grid undamaged, with a reasonable quantity of its own pegs. At that point the low price is real value.
